The old city surrounded by hills saw emperors born and die, temples rise and burn, wars destroy and artists create. This museum traces the city's unique history.
Housed in the former Bank of Japan, a brick building in the purest Meiji style, it presents and recounts the history of the city from its origins until today.
On the first floor, visitors can do their shopping and dining at "Roji Tempo," a shopping street in the style of the Edo period (1603-1868) fully recreated with its dozen shops. A second part of the building is devoted to the film industry, who found in the architecture of the city the best natural settings.
There are very good videos subtitled in English for the theme of each room and offer comprehensive explanations for the curious. Temporary exhibitions add to the attractiveness of a museum at the height of its imperial subject.
