Summary

Okayama, the starting point for this journey to Kyoto, is famous for the legend of Momotaro, the Peach Boy. A local culinary specialty reflecting the region's richness is "Barazushi," a colorful and elegant scattered sushi, often served in a bento box. We recommend travelers discover this culinary tradition at Okayama Station. Barazushi is made with fresh seafood from the Seto Inland Sea and local vegetables, offering a distinct gastronomic experience before arriving in the ancient capital.

Frequently asked questions

The Shinkansen journey between Okayama and Kyoto generally takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour, depending on the type of train. The fastest Shinkansen services, such as the Nozomi and Mizuho, complete the route in approximately 45 to 50 minutes. Sakura and Hikari trains, which make more stops, take about 50 minutes to 1 hour. These trains are renowned for their punctuality.

The cost of a Shinkansen ticket between Okayama and Kyoto varies depending on the reservation and seat type. For a non-reserved seat (Jiyuseki), the price is approximately 6,000 yen. A reserved seat (Shiteiseki) on a Hikari or Sakura Shinkansen costs around 6,500 to 7,000 yen. For a Nozomi or Mizuho with a reserved seat, the fare is slightly higher, approximately 6,700 to 7,200 yen. Prices may vary slightly depending on the season and class (Green Car being more expensive).

Yes, the Japan Rail Pass is valid on the Sanyo and Tokaido Shinkansen lines between Okayama and Kyoto. However, it's important to note that the Nozomi and Mizuho trains, which are the fastest, are not fully covered by the standard JR Pass. To travel on these trains, a special supplement ticket must be purchased in addition to the JR Pass. Hikari and Sakura Shinkansen services, on the other hand, are fully included in the JR Pass and make an excellent alternative for this journey.

The fastest Shinkansen trains to reach Kyoto from Okayama are the Nozomi and Mizuho services. These services make the fewest stops and allow you to reach Kyoto in approximately 45 to 50 minutes. Sakura and Hikari trains are also fast and efficient options, with a slightly longer travel time due to a few additional stops, generally between 50 minutes and 1 hour. All Shinkansen services offer high comfort and an environment conducive to rest or work.
