Omiyage and little pieces of advice
Beloved by followers of Zen, the spirit of purity contrasts with the mad consumption of the Japanese who are subject to the diktat of fashion. Although they are keen on international brands, just like their visitors, they also buy local gifts and souvenirs whenever they travel.
In Japan, the concept of omiyage (a souvenir to give as a gift) is a tradition. Omiyage literally means "product of the land" and refers to typical local souvenirs. It is common to take an omiyage back to family, friends and even colleagues in Japan. You can find these souvenirs in specialist shops, often located in tourist areas or railway stations. Tokyo Central Station has a wide selection of omiyage shops, from Tokyo and other regions!
Indulge yourself with handcrafted souvenirs
Rather than being scorned, craftsmanship is highly respected. Regarded as a "living national treasure", some masters, using timeless techniques, transform common objects into exceptional creations. From cool trinkets acquired at the 100 Yen shop to high-priced ceramics, there's something for everyone.
A print, a collector's item, a gourmet gift, a gadget, some manga, the latest high-tech product, or a jazz CD not found in Europe are sure to delight fans of Japanese culture.
