Your national Japan Rail Pass entitles you to seat reservations on many trains all over Japan. Learn here how to read the seat reservation ticket

The Japan Rail Pass entitles free reservation on all trains that are covered.

You may find that having a specific seat is more convenient than looking for empty seats on unreserved cars.

For some shinkansen (Komachi for Akita, Hayabusa to Shin Hakodate, Kagayaki to Kanazawa for example), reserved seat are required.

To make a seat reservation, you will have to go to a JR ticket office with your Japan Rail Pass and tell them your itinerary.

The day of your journey, you just have to show the JR Pass at the control gate and find your seat on the train. The car number will help you to find the right place to wait on the platform. Car numbers are indicated on screen and on the platform floor.
