However since the regional pass allows for travel on the same lines as the national pass it’s usually not worth buying it if you already have a national one.

The Shinkansen journey between Hiroshima and Okayama is quick. With the Nozomi or Mizuho trains, the journey time is around 35 to 40 minutes. For the Sakura or Hikari trains, the journey usually takes between 40 and 50 minutes. Kodama Shinkansen trains make more stops and therefore take longer. All of these trains run on the Sanyo Shinkansen line, which is known for its punctuality.

The cost of a Shinkansen ticket between Hiroshima and Okayama varies depending on the type of train and seat class. For a reserved seat in standard class, the price is generally between ¥5,000 and ¥6,000. Tickets can be purchased at JR ticket offices (“Midori no Madoguchi”), vending machines in major stations, or online. If you have a Japan Rail Pass, the Sakura, Hikari, and Kodama trains are covered. The Nozomi and Mizuho trains are not fully included in the JR Pass and require a specific ticket supplement.

Okayama offers several places of interest accessible from the station. We recommend visiting Korakuen Garden, considered one of the three most beautiful landscaped gardens in Japan. It is a short bus ride or walk from the station. Right next to Korakuen stands Okayama Castle, also known as “Crow Castle” because of its black facade. The two sites can easily be combined. The city is also famous for its connection to the legend of Momotaro (the peach boy), which is referenced in the station and around the city.

Yes, a day trip between Hiroshima and Okayama is entirely possible thanks to the efficiency of the Shinkansen. The short journey time allows plenty of time to explore Okayama's main attractions, such as Korakuen Garden and Okayama Castle. We recommend leaving early in the morning to maximize your time there. The return journey is easy, and trains run frequently until the evening.
