Mizukaze - Luxury train

Experience the most unique and exclusive way to admire the sights of West Japan, aboard the TWILIGHT EXPRESS MIZUKAZE! Departing from Kyoto Station, this first class sleeper train rolls through Western Japan and its many beautiful landscapes, from rocky coastlines to lush mountains and green rice fields.

Fukuyama Station is one of the few Shinkansen stations in Japan from which you can directly see a historic castle. Stepping off the platforms, Fukuyama Castle stands majestically, just a few minutes' walk away. This castle, rebuilt after World War II bombings, was originally erected in 1619 by Mizuno Katsunari and served as a strategic point to control the Sanyo region. Its immediate presence offers a cultural immersion upon arrival.

Frequently asked questions

We recommend taking a train on the Sanyo Shinkansen line from Hiroshima. The "Hikari" and "Sakura" services are direct and fast options. For Japan Rail Pass holders, these trains are fully covered. The "Nozomi" and "Mizuho" services are also available and faster, but are generally not included in the Japan Rail Pass. The journey takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes depending on the train type.

The cost of a Shinkansen ticket between Hiroshima and Fukuyama varies depending on the seat type and train. An unreserved seat generally costs around 3,900 yen. For a reserved seat, the price can be around 4,500 to 4,700 yen. These fares are indicative and may be subject to change. The Japan Rail Pass allows travel on "Hikari" and "Sakura" services at no additional charge.

Traveling by local train on the Sanyo Main Line between Hiroshima and Fukuyama is an alternative to the Shinkansen. The duration of this journey is significantly longer, generally ranging between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the number of stops and potential transfers. While more economical, this option is slower than the Shinkansen for this distance.

For a layover in Fukuyama, the main attraction is Fukuyama Castle, located right next to the station, accessible in less than a 5-minute walk. You can explore its ramparts and its rebuilt keep, which houses a museum. Not far from the castle is Fukuyama Rose Garden (バラ公園), which offers a pleasant setting for a stroll, especially in May-June and October-November during peak bloom. The Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum is also nearby, featuring various collections. These sites are easily accessible on foot from the station, allowing you to maximize a short layover.
