Location

As you approach Kagoshima-Chuo on the Kyushu Shinkansen, travelers can often catch sight of the majestic Sakurajima volcano, an iconic silhouette rising above Kinko Bay. This active volcano, with its frequent eruptions, offers a unique natural spectacle, visible from the train windows, especially on the right side when heading towards Kagoshima. It serves as a remarkable visual introduction to the southern Kyushu region.

Frequently asked questions

To travel from Hakata (Fukuoka) to Kagoshima, the most efficient method is to use the Kyushu Shinkansen. Trains depart from Hakata Station and arrive at Kagoshima-Chuo Station. This line is served by three types of Shinkansen: the Mizuho, Sakura, and Tsubame. The Mizuho is the fastest service, while the Sakura and Tsubame make more stops. We confirm that the seat comfort is designed for long journeys and that punctuality is a consistent feature of the Japanese railway network.

The cost of a Shinkansen ticket between Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo varies depending on the type of train and seat class. For a standard (ordinary) reserved seat on a Sakura or Tsubame train, the price is generally around 10,000 to 11,000 yen. For a Mizuho train, due to its speed, the cost may be slightly higher. Unreserved seats are usually a few hundred yen cheaper. It is advisable to check exact fares at the time of booking, as they may fluctuate slightly.

The Shinkansen journey duration between Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo depends on the type of train taken.
With the Mizuho train, the journey is the fastest, taking approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
With the Sakura train, the trip generally lasts between 1 hour and 25 minutes and 1 hour and 35 minutes.
The Tsubame train, making more stops, takes approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes to 2 hours.
These durations are indicative, and train punctuality is rigorously maintained.

The national Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is valid for Sakura and Tsubame Shinkansen services on the Kyushu Shinkansen line between Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo. However, the national JR Pass is *not* valid for Mizuho Shinkansen services. If travelers wish to use the Mizuho, they will need to purchase a full-fare ticket. For holders of a JR Kyushu Rail Pass, the situation is different, as these regional passes generally cover the Mizuho. We advise travelers to check the specific conditions of their pass.
